BRANCHVILLE, IN, June 4, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Karen Ann Smith, MS, CADAC II, Substance Abuse Counselor III and Family Community Re-Entry Specialist for Branchville Correctional Facility's Substance Abuse Re-Entry Department, was recently featured in Cambridge Publishing's Top 101 Industry Experts book. Karen Smith's dedication to providing addiction counseling grew out of a personal experience with a family member who became addicted to drugs and alcohol. Eighteen years later, Ms. Smith is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor II and is considered by her peers to be a highly proficient family, individual and group counselor of adult male offenders. Prior to joining Branchville Correctional Facility, Ms. Smith worked as a Casework Manager III for the Miami Correctional Facility, as a Substance Abuse Counselor IV for the North Central Juvenile Correctional Facility, as a Substance Abuse Counselor IV for the Branchville Correctional Facility during an earlier stint from 1991-1998, as an Office Manager for Indiana Michigan Power, and as a County Coordinator, Outreach Worker, and Clerical Staffer for Lincoln Hills Department Corporation.
Ms. Smith believes that her work ethic, tenacity, positive attitude and desire to learn are her strongest attributes. She earned a Master of Science in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2005, a Bachelor of Science in General Studies, with a minor in Sociology, from Indiana University, Kokomo in 2003, and an Associate Degree in Social Work from Vincennes University in 1978. She is a member of the Indiana Correctional Association, the Indiana Counselors Association on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Correctional Association. Honors with which she has been recognized include the Star Award (2007, 2008), Professional of the Year in Mental Health Counseling from Cambridge Who's Who (2007), the Outstanding Professional Award from Indiana Wesleyan University (2005) and the Employee of the Quarter Award (2000). Ms. Smith aspires to continue growing professionally, teach online classes and write a series of children's books based on her bird-raising experiences.
