NEW YORK, NY, May 21, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Richard P. Brown, MD, and Patricia Gerbarg, MD, will present two full day courses at the 2010 annual American Psychiatric Association meeting, Morial Convention Center, May 22 and May 23, in New Orleans. Their May 22 course, #CO07, from 9 am to 4 pm, is entitled Complementary and Integrative Treatments for Stress, Depression, Anxiety PTSD, Mass Disasters, Cognitive Function, ADHD, and Schizophrenia. The May 23 intensive, #CO28, also from 9 am to 4 pm, Yoga of the East and West: Integrating Breath Work, Movement, and Meditation into Clinical Practice, includes experiential training in therapeutic mind/body practices.
Participants in the Saturday session will learn how to integrate complementary treatments with standard treatments in psychiatric practice. The course focuses on research and clinical applications of evidence-based complementary treatments. Clinical practice guidelines, including risks and contraindications, will be presented. Participants on Sunday will learn the theoretical background and applications of powerful self-regulation techniques to improve their own well-being and the mental health of their patients. A program of non-religious practices will enable participants to experience gentle QiGong movements, Coherent Breathing, Resistance Breathing, Breath Moving, and Open Focus meditation. Through a sequence of repeated rounds of movement, breathing and meditation, participants will discover the benefits of these mind/body practices. How to build upon this knowledge and use it in clinical practice will be discussed. The Sunday course builds upon introductory material presented in the Saturday course.
