Alan S. Unis, MD, focuses his work on the early detection of severe and chronic mental illness in children

COEUR D'ALENE, ID, October 14, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Alan S. Unis, Medical Director of the Youth Services Program at Kootenai Medical Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in child and adolescent psychiatry.

With 34 years of experience in the medical profession, Dr. Alan S. Unis is a renowned authority on pediatric clinical trials research. He has devoted most of his career to Kootenai Medical Center, where he is in charge of managing the acute inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric center. Focused on serving children with severe and chronic mental illness, Dr. Unis is actively involved in the research and development of new treatments. He concentrates his studies on early detection, and considers preserving children from a lifetime of disability and stress to be the most vital aspect of his work.

Widely respected in his field, Dr. Unis is often invited to share his knowledge with his peers. He publishes his research frequently and recently authored an article on the efficacy and safety of risperidone on adolescents with schizophrenia. He is a Mead Johnson Fellow of the American College of Neuro-Psychopharmacology and a Thomas Holmes Scholar of the University of Washington. Additionally, he teaches as a member of the faculty of Washington State University's College of Pharmacy and Clinical Therapeutics. Dr. Unis previously lent his talents to Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, where he evaluated the efficacy and safety of medications for children and adolescents.

Dr. Unis completed his fellowship in neuropharmacology at the University of Utah Medical Center, his residency and fellowship in general, child and adolescent psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh, and his internship at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, a hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He obtained his MD in 1976, also from Pitt. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Additional affiliations include the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Kootenai Health Foundation. Dr. Unis aspires to build and develop a new clinical research center within the next five years.
